First Flower

Today I found something very special: the first flower to bloom in my garden this year! I wasn't expecting it at all. I hadn't even seen the buds on it yesterday. And then today, *poof!* it was there! :)

It's a pretty lonely crocus, if you ask me. But I'm expecting the others to bloom soon. :)

Some randomness to entertain you:

1. Did you know that if you plug your nose you can't hum? Try it. I dare you. ;)

2. "Stewardesses" is one of the longest words you can type using the "left hand" keys on the keyboard.

3. If English spelling made more sense, Ghoti could spell the word "fish". Don't believe me? Take the GH in the word "laugh". They make an F sound. So we have an F for fish.
In the word "women" the O is pronounced like an I. So now GHO is pronounced "fi"
In the word "condition" the TION is pronounced like "shun". So the TI makes an SH sound. So there you have it. Ghoti spells fish.
And no, I wasn't the clever one who figured that out. Unfortunately.

Paper Raindrops

Paper raindrops. That sounds like an amazing title for a song.

Paper raindrops taped to my wall.
They stay in place, yet seem to fall.

Perhaps that is the first part to the song that doesn't exist. You never know. :)


And yes, I really do have paper raindrops on my wall. They're quite beautiful, I think.

SPRING!

I went into my garden today (yes, I have my own garden). I scraped away some snow and look what I found! Things are turning green and growing under the snow! This is my blue flax.

Just in case you don't know what blue flax looks like, here's a picture of it blooming last summer. Pretty isn't it?

And Oh! GLORIOUS day! Happyhappyhappy. I saw crocuses starting to grow in my garden! Counting these three, there are seven little points poking through the mud. And I'm expecting more. :)

Calligraphy

It's me again. :)

So are you wondering why I've posted 4 times in the last 3 days? It's cuz three out of five people in my family are sick. I'm not one of them (whew!), but I have been a little bored being the only healthy kid. So I'm blogging. Deal with it. :)

Did you know I was taking a calligraphy class? It was once a week for 6 weeks. And this is the project I made during our last class. I wrote it on Parchment paper. Pretty fancy, huh?

Btw, that quote is from Katherine Mansfield. It's a nice quote, don't ya think?

Cuties

I have a new skill! Mom got a bunch of these "Cuties" and guess what!? I peeled one by hand without breaking the peel! That's right. I got the peel off in one whole piece. And I'm very proud of it, so don't go making fun. ;)

I could hardly believe it when I saw some buds on our lilac! AHHHHH! :)

Our backyard is a mucky mess. It looks worse in real life, believe me.

And oh, happy day! I don't know what this is, but even if it's a weed I'm happy. After all it's green and it's alive. What could be better?

Pileated Woodpecker

Today we saw a Pileated Woodpecker out our front window! Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers in most of North America. They are nearly 18 inches long! Cool, huh? :)

Doesn't it look like he has a rock star mohawk? ;)

Newest Lathe Creations

Last week, I went to a class with two of my friends to learn how to make wooden bowls. It was a two day workshop.

This bowl is one that I made on my own at home after the workshop. The bowl is sitting inside the log that it came from. The wood is called Russian Olive.

This is me holding it to show the size.

This bowl is one of the ones that I made at the workshop. We made two different shaped bowls. This is a more basic shape made out of Black Ash wood.

And this is a crazier shape! It is also made out of Black Ash.
